Dean M. Harris, JD, is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management, Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and adjunct associate professor in the UNC School of Law. In addition, he serves as adjunct professor in the Health Economics and Management Institute (HEMI) in the Guanghua School of Management at Peking University. Akesson, J. (Lund U.) presents a comprehensive study of the Arabic morpho-phonology by making available a range of material from the 8th century A.D. until our days. For this purpose she uses as a point of departure an Arabic source, the "Marah al-arwah" from the 13th-14th century that she edits, translates and comments. Having never been introduced to the study of languages, I was amazed at the detail that this author put into her work. As a novice, I was enthralled at the intricaces in which a language diciphered and broken apart. Every language has a history and this book has broken down Modern Arabic with a writing style and organization that is truley academic. A monumental achievement.

The True Meaning of Matteo Ricci

Simplicity at its finest: Chinese on one page, English on the other. Allows you to see exactly what Ricci was up to without a commentary pushing one's political agenda. That is, reading the text of "True Meaning" for oneself, one can conclude the truth about Matteo Ricci. He did not misunderstand the chinese, nor force them into conversion (one man against millions?) as the 'liberals' claim. Rather his understanding, respect and love for them was profound. He did not "water-down" or "sell-out" the Catholic faith by conceding or accomodating too much as so-called 'conservatives' claim. He did what any Catholic must do: he became all things to all men. And like St. Paul in the Agora, he presented the Real Christ in such a way that Christ was a)understandable to the people listening and b)true to the person of Christ.

Where it started

This (as far as I know) is the first book to use the term permaculture, first published in 1978, and which has led to a vast array of books expounding on the theory and application of the concept. Mollison and Holmgren define permaculture on page 1 of this book as "an integrated, evolving system of perennial or self-perpetuating plant and animal species useful to man". They go on, through this book, to lay out the basics of the concept, qualifying their definition and expanding on this particular brand of sustainable living. It is inspiring, and practical, and it is easy to see why it has inspired so many other practitioners and authors.

This work is probably not necessary unless you are interested in the history of the concept though. I haven't compared every single picture, but it looks like most of the information in here is repeated in Mollison's follow-on Permaculture: A Designers' Manual, and the vast majority is repeated in the cheaper Introduction to Permaculture. If you are interested in the concept, great, and start with the Introduction to Permaculture. For more pictures and examples of how these concepts work in real life, check out Restoration Agriculture or The Resilient Farm and Homestead. If you decide to get the permaculture certificate, you'll need Permaculture: A Designers' Manual since that's the textbook for the course.

Great info, just repeated and expanded upon in later works, now mostly interesting for historical reasons. Save your money and pass on this one.

Great Resource

After comparing many elementary math 'dictionaries' to help me understand and help my children with their math homework, I selected this book. I have been very pleased with it. The illustrations are thorough and the explanations are clear. I have found it to be a very helpful reference book to have on hand and we have referred to it often. I have found that my children will even get it out, if they are needing help with their homework. So far, I have not found an elementary math concept from my children's homework that has not been covered in this book. My kids are in fourth and fifth grade this year, so we have looked up many different areas in this book. I like it so much that I suggested it to the librarian at our local library to purchase. This book is a nice size with a flexible soft cover. It is approximately 1/3" thick and just a bit smaller than a piece of notebook paper. It is not too large, heavy and cumbersome to have around or to get out as some larger dictionaries are. I am planning to check if there are other Usborne books to help with other subject areas in school, such as social studies. To have all of the information that we need on a subject in one place is a wonderful thing!

Wonderful -- and effective!

This is one of three Usborne math books that we recently purchased. None of them disappointed! Even though one of them won't be used by my children for a few years due to the advanced level, I can already recognize the value it will provide.

I should add that our two oldest children (grades 3 and 1) are not 'naturals' in math. It's been a struggle. I highly recommend the Usborne math books as they were an instant hit, and made a rather trying subject fun - and many of the things in the book really did stick!

This is typically colorful and visually appealing to my children, and makes even 'advanced' concepts easy for them to understand. Super!

Young children, whose abstract reasoning abilities are only starting to develop, benefit from concrete representation and visualizations of otherwise abstract math concepts. This book includes a good exposition of series and geometry. The colorful illustrations are pleasing to the eye.

This book on electrical, optical, magnetic, and thermal properties of materials differs from other introductory texts in solid-state physics. First, it is written for engineers, particularly materials and electrical engineers, who what to gain a fundamental understanding of semiconductor devices, magnetic materials, lasers, alloys, and so forth. Second, it stresses concepts rather than mathematical formalism, which should make the presentation relatively easy to read. Third, it is not an encyclopedia: The topics are restricted to material considered to be essential and that can be covered in one 15-week semester.

The book is divided into five parts. The first part, "Fundamentals of Electron Theory," introduces the essential quantum mechanical concepts needed for understanding materials science; the other parts may be read independently of each other. Many practical applications are discussed to provide students with an understanding of electronic devices currently in use. The solutions to the numerical problems are given in the appendix.

Previous editions have been well received by students and teachers alike. This Fourth Edition has again been thoroughly revised and brought up to date to take into account the explosive developments in electrical, optical, and magnetic materials and devices. Specifically, new topics have been added in the "applied sections," such as energy saving light sources, particularly compact fluorescence light fixtures, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic photovoltaics (OPV cells), optical fibers,� pyroelectricity, phase-change memories, blue ray disks, holographic versatile disks, galvanoelectric phenomena (emphasizing the entire spectrum of primary and rechargeable batteries), graphene, quantum Hall effect, iron-based semiconductors (pnictides), etc. to mention just a few subjects.

About the Author
Rolf E. Hummel is a Professor Emeritus of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida, Gainesville, USA. He received his Ph.D (Dr. rer.nat.) in 1963 from the University of Stuttgart, Germany and the Max-Planck Institute for Materials Research, also in Stuttgart. He has been at the University of Florida since graduation, only interrupted by Sabbatical stays in Japan, Korea, China, New Zealand, France, Vietnam, Germany, and Colorado. His previous publications include Optical Properties of Metals and Alloys (1971), Electro-and Thermo-Transport in Metals and Alloys (ed.),(1977), the two-volume Handbook of Optical Properties (ed.), (1996), and Understanding Materials Science 2nd Ed. (2004). His books are widely appraised for their easy understandability.

A great reference text. Well organized and presented.

This is an excellent text for every electrical engineering student whether graduate or undergraduate. I found the information to be clear and concise which made the concepts easily manageable. The use of mathematical formulas are placed in such a way as to aid with the reading rather than to be overbearing as other solid-state physics texts can be. The author does a great job in sectioning the book into parts, thereby making it easier to focus on a particular area of interest without having to hunt for the deisred information. For practicing engineers, this is a good reference book, especially if you are looking to gain a further understanding of device physics.

Easy to read, concept-oriented treatment of the subject.

The author should be commended for writing a textbook that focuses on the concepts instead of mathematical formulas, making the subject easy to comprehend. At the same time, the formulas are there for more indepth understanding. Overall, a good textbook for an undergraduate student of materials science.

Well Written

I am taking Solid State Physics and my professor recommended this book along with 9 others separate from the text required for class. The text required for class can take a hike, but this book remained strong out of the 10 I checked out from the Library. I have the older version with a red cover but I have to say its pretty darn clear especially for such an abstract subject that even my professor has trouble explaining. Sometimes you find a gem. I wouldn't say it digs deep into any one thing but it does give an overview. I would seriously consider buying this book purely for reference durning my EE degree.

Close, but could be better

Add it to your collection, however, it has it's shortcomings. The author is defintly knowledgeable about his subject, however the presentation of the material could be better. The book reads like a compilation of magazine articles at times. If you have a good collection of VW Trends & Hot VW's magazines, you probably don't need this book. The author is also from the UK, so there are references to items, that if you are in the USA, may not be practical (i.e. brakes from a Horizon Talbot or something like that). He presents alot of options on various topics, but never really tells you what product "in reality" is the best (pros/cons). He also does not really get into true suspension tuning. Things are left pretty loose (i.e. adding an anti-sway bar will improve handling)....Well, as a race driver myself I could disagree with this statement in certain cases. He does not outline, basic vehicle dynamics tunings. Example: He does not say that Stiffening the rear of the car increases oversteer, and stiffing the front increases understeer. Let alone define under/over steer. The affect of tire pressures, alignment, etc. These TRUELY "tuning for High-Performance" items are either left out or glossed over.
Unless, you need a good reference on Brake "Options", or how to shorten you chasis for kit cars or Baja's, spend your money on "Keith Seume's book on Volkswagen Bug Performance". If you already own Keith's Performance book, you probably don't need this book.
Stongest Point: R&Ring King and Link Pins, Ball Joints, basic maintenance on the supspension.
If the book were titles "VW Suspension Maintenence and Options" I would have rated it a 4. The "high performance" angle despite the many brake options is misleading.

Perfect first book on chart reading

I was really surprised by this little book. I have read numerous books on technical analysis, but I picked it up because I am always looking for good entry books on the subject for friends who end up asking me about technical analysis. And this is now the one I will recommend. I've learned through reading a lot and through trial and error that the simpler the system the better, and nothing is gained from adding on all kinds of indicators and oscillators. The authors have reached the same conclusion and keep things very simple.
They are clearly relying to some degree, and for good reason, on the work of Andrew Lo, from MIT, who has written very technical, mathematical papers on various chart patterns and found several of them to be valid. They build very nicely from one concept to another with lots of charts to illustrate their points. Don't be throw off by the listing of 200 pages. Due to the size of the pages and the high number of charts, it reads as a much shorter book. But for a first book, I see this as a real positive. They just get right to the point.
Some people never accept the idea that charts might give a glimpse into the behavior of market participants, and that's fine. But for those who are not sure, this is a perfect book to start with. You'll get most of the many principles for drawing trend lines and for recognizing the important patterns, and then you can apply what you learn to charts going forward, and decide for yourself whether reading charts is for you or not. Much better than spending 2x or 3x more for many other books that you'll never get through.

The best way to start

This book is a very easy and fast read and gets to the point, clearly. I found I was on page 100 in less than an hour and I finished 2/3 of the book straight through before deciding to put it down (only because I had to go to bed).
Everything it teaches is fundamental and straightforward, the same introduction information you can find through hours of web searches, but here it is at a very low cost all in one place and all organized and easy to understand.
Of course it's a simple text, no deep analysis on the included material, and only a small amount of key material out of all that's out there in other resources, but the way it's presented, you keep finding new questions in your mind that make you want to go and research further. The book, being simple, doesn't leave you feeling short changed, it leaves you with a confidence as a newcomer to stocks and inspired to learn further.
If you start with this book and are meant to get involved in this stuff, you'll be fully prepared to get started and you'll know what your next steps are after this book - another book with more details on certain things you were introduced to here, or dive right into trading.
The one thing I'll point out that's specific about the text is that it is geared to medium term trades, those occurring over a few months span or longer, as opposed to a few days. They guide you to observe charts that establish patterns through more than a month of chart history, and then make your evaluation. I'm not sure if this can be applied to shorter term trades, but either way it's a good start.
I have 3 other books I bought all at once, I expect to learn everything I can. Being a beginner, I discovered this book by searching Amazon and reading people's reviews to find out what texts I should use to get started. By linking around from people's other recommendations within book reviews, I chose this book along with Toni Turner - Short term trading in the new stock market, Bruce Kamich - How Technical Analysis Works, and John Murphy - Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets.

Great introduction

A terrific introduction to 8 basic trend patterns, coupled with repetitive exercises forcing the reader to figure it out him/herself. A very few times I disagreed with the unnamed authors' solutions -- I think they miss better, stronger patterns. Also the book implies that if you read and work your way through you will be able to go out and trade successfully. I suspect that's not the case.

Excellent presentation and exercises. Cheap. A great buy and well worth the few hours it takes to work completely through. I am a somewhat experienced trader and I learned a lot.
