Stumbling Naked in the Dark: Overcoming Mistakes Men Make with Women, by Bradley Fenton

Stumbling Naked in the Dark: Overcoming Mistakes Men Make With Women is the revolutionary new book on male-female relationships by author Bradley Fenton. The author asserts that a majority of men repeatedly make common mistakes while interacting with women and thus unknowingly come off as unattractive. Fenton identifies these mistakes and suggests some rather unorthodox ways to overcome them. With integrity, maturity and humor, Stumbling Naked in the Dark explains once and for all why some men just don't get "it" and offers a new mindset for leading relationships in the right direction.

While most dating and relationship books have focused on understanding the differences between men and women, Stumbling Naked in the Dark focuses on the similarities between the sexes by exploring universal laws of human behavior. Relationship problems are due to the pressure created by the "aggressively flawed" role that people, and primarily men, learn to play in our culture. This leads to men exerting negative pressure and control that causes women to subconsciously withdraw and find men unattractive.

Stumbling Naked in the Dark teaches men how to alleviate the stress and pressure associated with dating so they become more relaxed and attractive to women and explores how men can focus on what makes women feel understood and comfortable, leading to their decisions of intimacy and commitment. For example, Fenton offers insights on how:

Interactions with women in today's social settings are burdened with pressure and distrust, leading to failure that creates a vicious cycle of anxiety and hopelessness.

Most men unknowingly approach relationships as a game and feel the pressure of losing if they don't get what they want.

Men mistakenly believe they have done something wrong if a woman chooses not to go out with them, creating an adversarial situation destined to fail.

Success with women is not an innate skill that only a few men possess. All men can have a relationship - it's a matter of breaking down mental blocks to attain it.

Women frequently make decisions about men based on their own anxieties and insecurities. In many cases, their availability to date has nothing to do with a specific man at all.

Letting go of a woman's decision-making - and being healthfully indifferent to the outcome of an interaction while still genuinely caring for her well-being - is the key to attracting women.

Making "No" an okay answer from women lessens pressure, adds more fun and actually leads to more "Yes" answers.

Fenton also discusses how to break through four common obstacles males encounter on the road to relationship success: Personal Warning Beliefs, Identity, Need for Approval and Tactile Needs and Energy.

By teaching men how to become more comfortable with themselves and erase preconceived notions about women, Stumbling Naked in the Dark offers a powerful framework for men who want to disengage from the typical "dating game" and be more confident, fair and intuitive in their relationships with women.

from Chapter 1
State of the "Union"

Guys, who taught you how to interact with women?

Until now, we men have had no clear source from which to gain factual and valid information on which practices bring about the best results with women. Information on the subject is confusing and fragmented at best. It is often based on the well-meaning advice of family members and friends who speak from emotions based on their own personal experiences, which may or may not be useful.

Although dealing with women is a topic of vital importance, there are not many places for men to gain crucial information about it, other than confusing bits and pieces contained within magazines, television, and movies. Thousands of columns are published yearly in men's journals such as Maxim and GQ, exclaiming, "100 Tips That Drive Women Crazy!" While these articles are somewhat entertaining, they are often illogical and useless when it comes to real-life situations, and they're usually based on the advice of personal friends and associates of their respective authors instead of any kind of credible authority.

Movies and television also play a significant yet confusing role in how we think we should act around women. Like it or not, actors such as Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Steve McQueen and Vince Vaughn are among those whose roles -- and sometimes personal lives -- have set a cultural benchmark on how we believe men should act and be perceived. After we watch their performances, we are left with the Big Question: What is it about these actors that is so attractive to women? We wonder how we can replicate it ourselves. Is the recipe to attraction simply good looks, fame and fortune? Or are there some other ingredients? Unfortunately, we're left to figure it out on our own.

The hard truth is this: Our culture teaches men skills and tactics that are actually harmful to our success with women.

It is our hope that when you've finished this book, you may be able to resolve most of the confusion you feel about this subject. You'll understand what makes men attractive to women, and you'll be able to put this into action in your own life in a constructive, satisfying way.

Now more than ever, men need to gain a better understanding of what women want, and they need to develop the ability to deliver it to them. We need this information because many men are in a very serious predicament, one that often goes unspoken. Tens of thousands of sharp and talented men are stumbling naked in the dark. It's what I call men who are not getting their needs met. Love, sex and tactile needs are basic requirements we have as human beings but in today's fast-paced society, they often seem elusive. Many men go for months at a time without having a date, let alone having their physical needs satisfied. This unfortunate trend is a fast-growing one, contributed to by such factors as longer work hours and an increase in the average age at which men marry. This problem affects not only a lot of lonely and frustrated men but women as well.

Excellent Advice, Scientifically-based, Well-written
By Tiffany Rapplean
Sure, I admit I liked the title, because stumbling naked in the dark is how I've often felt when trying to date people, and even later, when trying to work through a failing romantic relationship, or failing close friendship. But as a trainer, I'm intrigued by the fact that the author--also a trainer--based this book on his company's results-oriented training programs.

As the producer of a hard and soft science and tech podcast by and for geeks, I read a lot of dating books and websites to uncover and de-mystify the best geek dating tips for my listeners. This book is the best male perspective I've read so far. It's a quick read, and offers practical advice that could be used at any stage in a relationship. I particularly like the "female scale of interest/staying off sides" formula for interacting with women (the car salesman analogy the author gives makes perfect sense), and I also found the "hug quota/tactile needs and energy" concept to be fascinating, along with the effect "tactile debt" can have on a man's handling of physical interactions such as sex. The "opening 'no' agreement" in which "no" is established as an acceptable answer is also logical. In general, this author recommends men treat women with respect, which of course I appreciate, being female and all. ;)

Thus far, I'd recommend this book above any other I've read, especially if an individual (specifically a man) wishes to read just one book. "how to succeed with women", by Ron Louis and David Copeland is also quite good (and quite long), but offers a few different perspectives and is very much oriented towards men seeking to engage women in sex as the primary motive (relationships are second, but the sexual emphasis is notable; I offer this as an observation rather than as a criticism). Fenton's book is less targeted strictly towards sex, and manages to pack a great deal of useful, scientific information into a mere 127 pages.

Very insightful. Must reading for every guy who's single.
By A Customer
This book hits the nail on the head! It touches on all the complaints my girlfriends and I have had for years about men. If men read this book and incorporated its very simple principles into their actions, there'd be a lot less single people out there. It's very intelligently written by new author Brad Fenton. His distillation of behavioral techniques into relationship-building principles (gleaned from years of teaching sales training to businesspeople and organizations) is right on the mark! I especially liked the section on not becoming attached to the outcome when a guy meets a girl. Concentrating on the getting-to-know-you process, not pushing the woman to make a decision and learning how to make no an acceptable response are much needed ideas. We (women) all want a man to listen to us more instead of telling us what we should do. This book explains, in eye-opening language, how men really can get into our psyche and act in a way that will make them infinitely more attractive. I am buying this book and sending it to the all guy-friends I know!

a clear, concise start for anyone looking to improve in the dating game.
By Travis Stein
When I first purchased this book, I was purchasing it for the sheer hell of it as I had bought about 5-6 other books on the wide world of dating. Fenton lies out a clear, concise formula for greater success with women both on the first date and after the first date. This isn't a pickup book though, there are no clever lines or strategies to get to that first date, although you could apply some of the first date techniques to pre-first dates as well. There are no magical spots to meet women here, when to call, etc. However, it is a book that will explain a great deal of misconceptions many guys, including myself, have about women and what buttons to push and not to push for gaining that compatibility factor with any woman. More importantly, this book gives you the right mindset in dealing with the opposite sex. Perhaps, that's more important than many of these "pickup 101" and "where and how to seduce women" books. Because if you don't have the right mindset, you can read the player books all you want, but it won't make a damn bit of difference if you lack confidence and the right frame of mind around women. That being said, the four star rating is largely due to the fact that some scenarios the author envisions, I just can't see happening too often. The wording that Fenton suggests in some scenarios seems a little too wordy and almost without a doubt, forced in some cases. Overall, a solid book and I'd recommend "always talk to strangers" by David Wygant for a solid pair of books on the enormous realm of dating.

The Russian Vision: The Art of Ilya Repin, by David Jackson

Ilya Repin (1844-1930) is a key figure of Russian nineteenth-century realism; his career spanned a period of huge cultural, social and political change, bearing witness to the challenge to the Russian autocracy, the coming of the October Revolution and the dawn of the Soviet Union. From humble peasant beginnings Repin rose to a place of artistic pre-eminence and international acclaim and was the most important influence in shaping a distinctly Russian school of art. Through a series of successful but controversial works he addressed such issues as the hard lives of the peasants, the fate of revolutionary activists and Russian history, as well as painting some of the nation's greatest cultural figures, many of whom - such as Tolstoy, Mussorgsky and Gorky - he counted as personal friends.

The Russian Vision: The Art of Ilya Repin presents the life and work of the most celebrated Russian painted of his generation. A comprehensive survey of Repin's oeuvre, featuring a wealth of little-seen paintings; dramatic, distinctive images that evoke the hardships, pleasures and everyday routines of Russian society in the twilight years of Tsarist rule. Having declined in the twentieth century, Repin's reputation is growing again.

Combining close readings of all his major canvases, as well as many of his lesser-known works, within the broader context of Russian art, society and culture, written in an accessible style, David Jackson's book, featuring more than 100 colour plates of Repin's work, and telling the story of his life, will do much to help restore his stature.

The artist is wonderous, the reproductions atrocious.
By A. Mirecki
I haven't got the book with me so I can't point to the page that truly defines this effort but the painting it obliterates is Ivan the terrible and his son. Here is what they do: First it is important to remember that this is Repin's best known painting, thus it gets a two page spread! On this two page spread there are two margins of about an inch, on each side of the painting. The key point, the focus for the entire painting is the face of Ivan and his son. This focal point is square in the middle of the binding, completely cut from view unless you want to tear the book out of its bindings (not a bad idea). Had they moved the painting off center by... say 3/4s of an inch either left or right they would have had the focal point in view. They could have also made it a one page picture and used close ups to see detail. Unfortunately, it doesn't actually matter because the reproduction is so dull that the blood, yes that is blood, is a rather bland greyish red. I understand that Repin was working from a limited palatte here and that the remainder of the painting is rather bland but not those reds. Now the written portion of this book is well done as far as I have read, so this isn't a complete loss but for good reproductions of Repin's work the wait continues.

Worth waiting for
By Milt. Hanson
This work covers an area that is neglected by Art historians in most publications, if not all publications, in the United States. The leading Art Historians may mention icon painting in Russia and St. Basil but that is the extent of their coverage.

The period of the Wanderers is probably as interesting and revolutionary as is the artistic movement in France with the advent of Impressionism. Ilya Repin was a leading artist in this movement. In simple terms the movement involved social realism. Prior to this movement the Russian Artist had no oppotunity to explore those things that were Russian. The artist now found that there were Russian subjects that demanded their attention. The Western European themes were discarded and Russian genre painting was the aim. The artist now saw beauty in the life of the peasant and in the history of Russia. The author has not just touched on this subject but has in exploring the life of Ilya Repin covered the subject with clarity and verve. It must have been a labor of love.

The author has an in depth review of Ilya Repin's life and an extensive collection of the artists work. He paints word pictures that add to the enjoyment of Ilya Repin's masterpieces. The quotes and biographic statements show an in depth study of the life and times of Ilya Repin.

One star is lacking because, even though I do crossword puzzles, there were times when I had to go to the dictionary. It is too bad that authors of Art Books try to impress the reader, when in fact they do just the opposite.

For any art lover and especially for lovers of realism this book is a must. If the reader is looking for a history of the evolution of Russian painting he or she will not be disappointed in this volume.

I am not a critic nor am I an artist, and I certianly do not "want-to-be". I am a person who does enjoy art books and I found this book to be informative, enjoyable and interesting. It is a must on that art lovers shelf.

Ilya Repin's experiences with art in the United States which is covered in the latter part of the book will give the reader an idea of why the United States has not seen many works by Russians.

If this was a critical review the book would get a big thumbs up.

I hope to find a book on Ge that is as well done.

Repin who?
By Rico Lebrun
To those of you (us) artist looking for inspiration away from the shrill squeal of Koons, Hirst, etc., take heart. There is art available to inspire as never before. This book is the perfect example of inspiration. Ten years ago Repin was all but unknown to most of us in the west. Thanks to a groundbreaking show in 2002 at the Groninger Museum in Holland his genius has been exposed to the rest of the world. Now we have this wonderful resource.

I count about 100 color reproductions in this books. Of that 100, I would say that about six are below standard. Most are in the good to excellent range. That assessment might change were I to be standing in front of the paintings with the book in hand. But I, like most of the reviewers here, will most likely never be in the presence of the originals. My guess is that we might be very disheartened by most of our art books were we to judge their reproductions by the originals. If you are worried about the quality of the reproductions, do not.

Repin is rightly held in the highest esteem for his portrayal of personalities in his portraits and his dramatic compositions in many of his large historical work. His portraits are stunning! The book does an outstanding job of reproducing some of his best. To top it all off, the book is very readable. No deconstruction. No revelations regarding his sexual life. The text follows a thematic approach as opposed to a strait biography. The author quite clearly states his reason for writing the book: "The purpose of this book then is simple if ambitious; to place Repin back in the public arena and to re consolidate a formidable and once familiar talent within the discipline of art history." Well done Dr Jackson!

For those of you who like Serov, Kroyer, Zorn, Zuloaga, Sorolla, Degas, Sargent, Mancini, etc., you will really appreciate this book on Repin!

The Younger Evangelicals: Facing the Challenges of the New World, by Robert E. Webber

Robert E. Webber has led worship workshops in every major city in the United States and Canada. Through his conversations and contacts with a network of emerging church leaders he calls the "younger evangelicals," Webber sees how this new generation and their style of leadership is bringing change and renewal to the evangelical church. These leaders, who include those young in spirit as well as young in age, have important insights to offer all generations faced with "doing church" in a rapidly changing postmodern culture.
The Younger Evangelicals explores the characteristics of these emerging leaders and provides an outlet for their stories. Beginning with a brief overview of twentieth-century evangelicalism, Webber examines what is different about the twenty-first century younger evangelicals' way of thinking about faith and practicing church. He allows them-Ph.D.s and laypeople-to speak in their own words on issues such as communication, theology, apologetics, pastoral leadership, evangelism, worship, and spiritual formation.
Thought provoking, energizing, and timely, The Younger Evangelicals is a landmark book for pastors and church leaders, culture watchers, ministry students, and worship leaders who want to prepare for and respond to the new evangelical awakening brought on by our changing cultural context.

From Publishers Weekly
Over a quarter of a century ago, Richard Quebedeaux chronicled the history and prospects of evangelicalism in his sociology of religion study, The Young Evangelicals. Webber, who teaches at Northern Seminary in Wheaton, Ill., offers an insider's perspective on the present state and future of evangelicalism. He contends that the "younger evangelicals" include anyone "who deals thoughtfully with the shift from 20th- to 21st-century culture. He or she is committed to construct a biblically rooted, historically informed and culturally aware new evangelical witness in the 21st century." In this splendid overview of the shifts in the evangelical landscape, Webber examines the differences in theological thinking, worship styles and communication styles; attitudes toward history, art and evangelism; and ecclesiology between "traditional" evangelicals (1950-1975), "pragmatic" evangelicals (1975-2000) and younger evangelicals (2000-). For example, where the traditional evangelicals argued theologically that Christianity is a rational worldview and pragmatic evangelicals contended theologically that Christianity is a therapy that answers needs, the younger evangelicals' theological program involves a return to ancient Christian and Reformation teachings that Christianity is a community of faith. These younger evangelicals, he argues, are highly visual believers, possessing great facility with technology. They are committed to the plight of the poor, multicultural communities of faith and intergenerational ministry, and they recognize that the road to the future runs through the past. Webber's helpful and thorough guidebook offers a generous assessment of the history of evangelicalism as well as a judicious but enthusiastic evaluation of its prospects in the 21st century.

From the Back Cover
A new evangelical awakening is taking place around the world. And the changes are being introduced by an emerging generation of leaders-The Younger Evangelicals. Who are they and what is different about their way of thinking and practicing church? How are they keeping ministry up to speed with our rapidly changing culture? In this provocative and energizing book, they will tell you.

"If you're suspicious about new winds blowing across the evangelical coastland, please don't criticize until you've read The Younger Evangelicals. It is by far the most thoughtful description of what's going on. If you're not critical but just curious, Webber will give you a thorough immersion into the emerging church. And if you're 'younger' yourself or young at heart, you'll find Webber giving voice to much that you have felt but couldn't yet articulate. Webber proves himself a sagely resource for this fresh, fledgling movement in this wise, warm, timely book."
Brian McLaren, pastor, author, senior fellow with Emergent (www.emergentvillage.com)

"At a time when many graying prognosticators are bemoaning the state of the church, it is refreshing to read a commentator of Robert Webber's stature who is optimistic about the future of the evangelical cause. Webber documents the presence of a cadre whom the Holy Spirit is raising up to lead the church in offering a biblically rooted, historically informed and culturally aware gospel witness. I am personally encouraged by Webber's findings."
Stanley J. Grenz, Distinguished Professor of Theology, Baylor University

"The Younger Evangelicals is an eye-popping, brain-bending look at where the evangelical church must head if it has any hopes of impacting postmodern culture. A superbly researched, foundational work, it is easily the best primer on the emerging church that I have seen."
Sally Morgenthaler, founder of Sacramentis.com, author of Worship Evangelism

Almost a postmodern solution
By Dan Sullivan
This book is a great resource and is loaded with a ton of valuable food for thought, but I cannot quite recommend it wholeheartedly without a few minor reservations.
I found many of the ideas expressed by the author and those he has interviewed and learned from to be not only refreshing but at times very moving. Most notable would be the notion that the church is supposed to be "incarnational", that is, the church is Body of Christ, the presence of Christ in the world - therefore the best apologetic is seeing people living truly and honestly under the rule of God in this life, in true community and service.
The author's main premise is that Evangelicalism has moved through three phases in the last few generations. The traditionalist phase exalted reason and doctrinal correctness above all else. The Pragmatic Phase emphasized felt needs and marketing strategies to make faith relevant and accessible to seekers. But the Younger evangelicals have turned toward "authenticity" and away from rationalistic or pragmatic approaches, seeking a God who is beyond rational definitions. They wish to communicate the faith by embodying the teaching of Christ, rather than articulating principles or programs.
The way many young evangelicals (as well as many in mainline protestant denominations and Catholic and Orthodox believers) have adapted to Postmodern thought can be both heartening and frightening. On the one hand, the recognition that rationalism has infiltrated the church is undeniable and worth correcting. Not only have liberal theologians applied naturalism to scripture in a way that removed the supernatural from faith, but conservatives have applied the scientific method to biblical interpretation to the point where individual interpretation reigns. The Holy Spirit and the consensual interpretation of the rest of the church have been ignored or rejected altogether. Rationalism has also led many in the church growth movement to embrace marketing strategies at the expense of authenticity and perhaps biblical fidelity, a plastic notion postmodern evangelicals are rejecting.
The answer many from various denominational backgrounds are embracing is one that says that the Holy Spirit grants truth to the community of the faithful, so that there is solid footing in finding the common shared beliefs of Christians in various cultures and various time periods. Younger Evangelicals look particularly to the early church prior to Constantine. They are more open to embracing the historic creeds, communication of faith through symbols and sacraments and are less arrogant about finer points of non-essential doctrines. Thus they are quicker to strike alliances across denominational lines and more open to dialog with Catholic and Orthodox believers. And they are willing to use radical hi-tech methods to communicate timeless truths.
The one cause for pause is that many in the postmodern Christian movement (some of whom are quoted in this volume) seem to embrace a bit too uncritically many of the dangerous assumptions of the postmodern fringe. They are quick to assert that "foundationalism" is inadequate in and of itself, and to point out that the church has been unduly influenced by modernism, but fail to see that in many ways they are failing to judge postmodern thinking in light of a Biblical worldview and are quickly allowing postmodern thought to unduly influence their own view of church. They are in the prison house of their own words. So they criticize the previous generation for conforming to the spirit of the rationalistic age, but freely embrace the spirit of the mystical age in which they live. They insist that truth is not "propositional" but must use propositions to make that very case.
In rejecting rationalism, many seem to throw out rationality as well. For example, Webber documents the shift from evidential apologetics to incarnational apologetics, which is a shift that has some merit. But is it necessarily true that all evidential apologetics is hopelessly enmeshed in "modernism"? Because modernism failed to find answers to metaphysical questions, does that mean that satellites will all fall from the sky and the laws of physics and engineering no longer have value? Is the resurrection not historically defensible? If "evidential" apologetics is really passe' and naive, shall we reject Paul and Luke as modernists because Paul argued from evidence and Luke cited eyewitness accounts and "many infallible proofs"? Are all of evangelical scholarship and apologetics of the last 100 years worthless?
The problem with much of the church's response to postmodern thinking is that many of the analysts of this thought wrongly assume that the only alternative to fading modernism is wholeheartedly embracing emerging postmodernism. The truth is, a Biblical worldview preceded both, and allowed for genuine rationality and appeal to evidence, tempered with the truth that humans are finite, fallen and need the grace of the Holy Spirit to ultimately make sense of it all. There are hints of such a third alternative in Webbers book particularly in the later chapters.
The chapters on youth ministry and worship are excellent and provocative. The many charts that end each chapter of this book are worth the price themselves. If Younger Evangelicals can speak to the anti-Modern generation in new ways, re-establish the church as a true reflection of Christ on Earth without succumbing to total mysticism and irrationality, then the future could look very bright. I loved almost everything about this book - almost.

Heart Freshly Stirred, But Read With Discernment
By A Customer
I highly recommend "The Younger Evangelicals." Dr. Webber has portrayed a stunning mosaic of what God is freshly stirring in many hearts today. God is moving many with a fresh desire for a church community that knows each other well enough to have authentic relationships. We see ourselves as a people of God's Presence with our corporate life as "mission," something we are and not just something we do. We don't just want to hear the wonderful stories in Scripture, but we want to experience them so that His story intersects our personal stories. We desire to share Jesus with others in our sphere of influence in natural, non-religious ways, living out the Good News and not just verbalizing it. A new leadership is developing with servants becoming participative leaders, a team without any abdication of healthy leadership. Dr. Webber threads this fresh move of God throughout "The Younger Evangelicals" in a way that stirs a, "Yes, Lord!" from within.
What concerns me, however, is HOW this mature man of God encourages these younger leaders to find the answer. First, his book seems to imply that the norm today is to leave the established church and start a new church plant from scratch. There's nothing wrong with that as an option, but the existing church also needs these impulses. Many of his arguments describing the established church set up the mega church as the "straw man." The mega church is only one expression of the church, and certainly has built-in problems when the goal is a relational community of believers. Second, candles, incense, icons, silent retreats, etc. are the methods that I see salted throughout the book. Methods could have been communicated in a way that heal the gap with the existing church instead of intensifying it (for instance, use "an intimate devotional time with Jesus" instead of Lectio Divina). I'm concerned that this book may splinter the western church even more by encouraging younger evangelicals to embrace outward methods that isolate them from the present church life. Third, I also believe God is after something much more central and essential than new methods. The Lord of glory wants us to change the way we experience Him and each other. Only out of this radical change in our theology can we discover new, fresh methods (if needed) to experience this new life.
I want to commend Dr. Webber for his excellent insight into this fresh move of God and for his heart to follow Him without compromise. But please read "The Younger Evangelicals" with discernment and eat the meat and spit out the bones. Younger evangelicals, please don't separate yourselves from the existing church. We need your energy and fresh way of looking at the Kingdom. Older evangelicals, don't marginalize younger evangelicals because some of the ways in which they express themselves threaten the existing order. Change may be threatening, but it's Kingdom. Younger evangelicals need mature mentors, and mentors need fresh expressions of the life of Jesus to continue to challenge them as lifelong learners. My plea is to dialog and learn from each other because we desperately need one another (1 Corinthians 12:12-27).

You need this book if you are over 30
By Keith Drury
If you are under age 30 stop reading here-and go read something else. However, if you are over 30-especially if you are in my own "boomer" generation, this is probably the most important column I'll write this year.
There is a book you need to buy. No, it isn't one of my own books-I don't use the Tuesday Column to promote books-not even my own. I review them sometimes (but that only makes it easier for you not to buy them-since my reviews are pretty complete.) I'm breaking my own rule today-I found a book every person over 30 interested in church ministries need to own.
This book is about the twentysomthing crowd Well, not exactly them, but about an emerging movement in the church made up of mostly Twentysomethings. That crowd might not like this book because the book tells us boomers all their secrets. In fact they hate being labeled at all, and hate it doubly when Boomers do it. But since they are no longer reading this and are off reading something else by now, let me tell you over-30 folk why this book is so important.
If you are a regular reader of my "Tuesday Columns" you already know I often knock us boomers for our generational arrogance. We think we are so cool, so "contemporary." We think our ways of doing church are so wonderful and we assume we've made something lasting. I often warn us that our churches are headed to becoming "Boomer nursing homes" where we continually congratulate ourselves on how cool we still are, while totally losing the next generations and the world and never noticing!
Finally there is a book that explains what is happening in the massive generational shift. So far there have been bits and pieces here and there, but now Robert Webber has put together a book outlining the secrets of this enormous shift in thinking that involves younger people mostly, but many older folk as well. Using the term "Younger Evangelicals" instead of "post modern or some other silly term, he outlines in chapter 1 the recent history of evangelicalism since 1950 in the most concise way I've seen anywhere-take that Martin Marty! That chapter is worth the first ten dollars of the book's ...price tag. But the rest of the book outlines chapter by chapter the immense shifts in the world under our boomer feet. Most boomers reading this book will feel like they are still leading singing in a "praise team" in a church with mauve carpeting while using colorful sponge covers on their individual microphones. Be careful-this book will make you feelout of date out of touch and out of coolness. If you are a "successful pastor" you'll hate it more-because some of what is happening among the next generation are things you spent ten years overthrowing when you were younger. You'll say, "well, this is only a trend among the younger folk-they'll change eventually" (what they said about us!)
In this book you'll discover in easy to read format how communication has changed, how the view of history has changed, how propositional theology is in total meltdown, how apologetics has shifted, how ecclesiology has shifted shockingly. And you'll find out how the view of the church as a marketed product has shifted, how the role of the pastor-CEO has become laughable, how youth ministry is switching from parties to prayer, [how] education is changing, the new way to see spiritual formation, how worship leadership has shifted, how art is being renewed, how evangelism is altered, and how activism happens in a new way.
Boomers don't have to read this book. We've got our churches going nicely now, we've constructed our cool wraparound-the-stage worship centers and have a good giving base so we can essentially blow of the next generations and the world and happily sing our way into retirement bringing our "sacks of rice on trays" every Sunday. We can survive into retirement singing and preaching to ourselves. A few of our parent's churches did that-they are still around full of "the Greatest generation" wondering what happened in the 1970's that seems to change things. We can do that and survive.
But if we are interested in the enormous shifts that are taking place in our children and their friends-and we seriously want to know why they think the way we do church stinks and they feel compelled to plan "authentic churches" then this book gives away their secrets.

Rylee's story , the beginning . Great short story.
By dknouse
Rylee Adamson is 17 and receiving training from her mentor Giselle. Rylee's first encounter with Millie is highlighted. Rylee just learns she has supernatural abilities and that there is a possibility she can track her little sister Burget, if it weren't for the fact she believes her sister is dead and she feels responsible. Rylee encounters the FBI agent determined to make a name for himself by charging her with her sister's death if he can arrest her; he constantly follows Rylee trying to catch her with evidence that will cement his case.

I love the world Shannon Meyer has created with Rylee and the characters that she collects on her adventures and she comes to love fiercely, those who are loyal and become part of the pack. This is a really great series that will keep you on the edge of your seat, make you laugh and cry at times. So reviewers have expressed frustration at some turn of events but they are explained as the stories unfold and the storyline just gets juicier! Don't believe everything you read in a negative review, judge for yourself by reading the whole series and the anthologies first, I am hooked on this series and it will go into my collection for rereading over and over. I don't believe you will be disappointed if you buy this series and read it to the end.

Wonderful little side story!
By Amazon Customer
I am beginning to think that everything Shannon Mayer writes is GOLD!! PLATINUM!! WITH DIAMONDS!!!
I'm glad I didn't read this before starting the series. I'm between 5 & 6, and needed something to relax with, and this was perfect!! So, my recommendation is not to read this until you're at that point, because there is a whole aspect in this short story that you do not even know about.
***SPOILERS BELOW THIS MARK***
All I can say is poor Milly. I don't even think she had any clear chance at life - at making her own choices. It seems she's be compelled this entire time - and no FREAKING wonder she's promiscuous. She's probably got some sort of borderline personality disorder!! I'd have Daddy issues, too, if my dad sold me to a demon!! Seriously, this little side-story was fun to read!! Took me like an hour, but still!!
***SPOILERS ARE OVER!***
This short is very mild, violence/blood-wise. Language is still very colorful, but it is this reader's opinion that it totally enhances our favorite Tracker's character & likable-ness (yes, I just made that word up!). Also, my ONE beef about these books is they need a good grammar editor. I'm always in edit mode - I just can't seem to turn that part of my brain off - and is be happy to give these awesome books a once-over for free if I was asked!! Just puttin' it out there!!
TLDR: Great little add-on!! Read up to book 5 in the Rylee Adamson Series before you read this one, or it can spoil a rather LARGE aspect of the story!! If you haven't read these yet, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!! One-Click these babies!!

What a great star!!!!
By Barb (Paging Through The Days)
Well hello my friendly little novella. I swear with each book or novella or book Shannon writes my love for Rylee and this series grows ten fold. It's a fantastic adventure in the pages of each book or novella. You get to dive into Rylee's world and explore, bringing back more knowledge than you had before. ***small spoiler alert***

So in Tracking Magic we learn how Rylee becomes a tracker. A fluke. Who knew but I guess worse things have happened. We also get to meet Milly for the first the and... Yeah she's a twinkly twat from the get go. Rylee's new power to track makes it so she can find Milly, who is a missing child that has something no one wants her to have. A stone. A demon stone to be exact. With said stone a demon can cross the veil at anytime he/she wants. No one in the supernatural community wants her to have it. And now Rylee and Giselle have the task of finding her, saving her and getting the stone away from her. They do find and save her... but they can't get the stone from her.

Orion is a nasty. Nasty demon. He orders Milly to wipe their memories. And... Like a good little demon whore she does it. But before he left Rylee promised him she'd kill him. Let's hope it's not too late to make that threat come true!

And this is how a tracker was born and a journey of epic proportions started.

Wonderful resource for children & adults
By RollTideGirl
This book will give you and your children incredible knowledge of both science and animals while never having to worry about evolution theories popping up in the text. This title does not compromise God's Word and in fact, it stands firm on the truth of creation. This would make great supplemental material in homeschooling, be a wonderful reference book and children from elementary to high school students can use it and enjoy it. You will explore over 1,000 of God's most extraordinary creatures in this 256 full-color book. You will examine the diverse anatomy, behavior and habitats of all types of animals. It includes information about the smallest microscopic worms to the largest animals God ever created, the whales. Filled with fascinating facts and intriguing animal records this book will teach you and your child all about the amazing animals God created. Our children love to learn about animals and are fascinated by their behaviors, habitats and lives. We often found the kids sitting in the floor reading this book together. This book covers simple animals, worms/snails/starfish, insects & other anthropods, fish, amphibians and reptiles, birds and mammals. The kids learned interesting things about animals like: The giant clam, tridacna, lives in Pacific Ocean and its shell can be over 4 feet in length and it can weigh as much as 725 pounds! Our 6 year old loved the Giant Anteater information as that is currently his favorite animal. And want to know which animal our kids were most intrigued by so far? Look up "Gulper Eel" ~ The picture of it in this book was so fascinating to them we actually spent a whole afternoon looking up more about it online!

The Great Big Book of Everything
By Karcher
My 2 year old daughter loves this book. We bought it for her because she watches Stanley on Disney Channel and wanted a "Great Big Book of Everything" just like Stanley. This book fits the bill. While there is a lot of textual information about the animals, a younger child can enjoy just looking at the pictures, which generally fill up over half of the pages. My daughter is now at the point where she will ask me what animal I like, and then she will find it in the book.

The only criticism I have of the book is that the first couple sections are on simple animals like worms, and that they are given equal time to mammals, which is what younger children are most interested in.
