POSITIVE DECEPTION, POSITIVE REVIEW!!
By Sonya Fuller-Campbell
LaCricia has raised the bar yet again, what to say what to say? This lady has an inside track on love, drama, real Christianity, and a current reality on the tragedies of the world today. She is fresh , accurate, modern, and has a perfect way to relay these topics to the reader while keeping your interest peeked for page after page after page without ever bordering along the lines of boredom. The length of the book was well thought out to develop the characters smoothly as well as the story line while at the same time lending a sense of what seems to be a personal spin on the accuracy of real time incidences and still keeping it real from a spiritual and personal perspective. The book handled controversial subjects that people are aware of but seem to steer clear of touching upon. I would most definitely recommend Ms. A'Ngelle to friends, family and avid readers who enjoy reading from this genre. Another excellent choice of reading from a powerhouse author.

LaCricia A'ngelle's POSITIVE DECEPTION Questions How Much Truth Is Enough
By Cyrus Webb
One of the great things about reading fiction is that you are able to take what are real situations and travel through the lives of the characters you meet, asking yourself would you do something differently than they did. in LaCricia A'ngelle's POSITIVE DECEPTION we meet Lina and Maxwell: two individuals who seem to have it all together but have issues that threaten to destroy their chances at happiness.

Both Lina and Maxwell know what it's like to love and to lose, and though they might see each other differently, they are really two sides of the same coin. Both have secrets. Both are trying to move forward. Both are forever changed by the past. What will matter is will they be able to go forth together, not allowing what has been to keep them away from what can be.

When the past is revealed, a decision has to be made. Will they allow their faith in God to lead them or will fear keep them from enjoying happiness forever?

A'ngelle gives men and women something they can enjoy in POSITIVE DECEPTION, making it a great conversation piece. There are also lessons to be learned that the characters teach about the truth and how it liberates us all. It is all about opening yourself up to the lesson. It might not be pleasant at first, but it gives you something lasting and real in the end.

Great Read
By Mshmt
Absolutely wonderful, this is the 2nd book I have read and is awaiting the next one. Ms A'ngelle is dealing with true life issues today very believable, you feel like you know these characters or at least you want to. I am a very analytical person and I like that the book made me question myself and what I would or not possibly do. Most of all it was definitely GOD based and it showed human emotion even in GOD directed people. Yes girl!

I loved it. I was very excited to learn about angels. I believe I have encountered a couple in my life--probably my own angels to assigned to me. They were in a large man reaching down and grabbing me out o the path of a truck. An alley ran beside our house and I was running around the house edge and fell. A large delivery trunk was coming right there- I must have bee around 3 yrs. old. He carried me up to my house and gave me to my mother. She does not remember this but I do! The last remembered encounter, was about 9 years ago. I was in the process of having another hip revision and was in pain and could not been down very well to put air in my car tire. I was asking the Lord how am I going to be able to air my tires(one kept losing air). When I pulled up to the air hose meter, a young boy (about 14 or so) appeared and offered to help me. I did not see him come up to me. I was very surprised and thankful, I told him my problem. He walked around filling my tires with air. I thank him and offered him a couple dollars and he refused. (I still did not think angel). I insisted and told him to buy himself a soft drink. Told him how thankful I was and that I felt he was an answer to my prayer. I looked down to open my car door and he "just" disappeared. I looked every where around the gas station and could not see him and felt he could not have vanished just like that--then I thought "angel" and thanked God. I was so excited to read about the coming harvest--that it will be greater than Acts 2. and the exciting "Force" for the end time harvest. I am 83 years old. I feel I have more to be doing with this end time harvest. I am very excited. Thank you for this book too. While I seemed to be limited on physically. I am a person that prays and have been doing this for awhile. It does not take the physical aspect, I can pray. God bless and keep you all in His loving care and direction. Thank you Mr. Sheets, for being attentive to The Holy Spirit and writing this book. I tell other about your book.

"Designers take note: this book will guide you to creating the next generation of viral must-have apps. The bright light of fresh design thinking reveals that there is lots more to be done with our smartphones, tablets, and personal media. I'm charmed by the big ideas and promising technologies that will make our lives better, our relationships more fulfilling, and our communities more connected."
Ben Shneiderman, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Maryland Human-Computer Interaction Lab; coauthor ofDesigning the User Interface: Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction
"The authors have served up a fresh and exciting challenge for designers, students and researchers, inviting them to dare to think differently. Instead of simply following the default framing of technological design in terms of yet another 'looking down' app they ask the reader to look up and around them and be inspired by how we actually live our lives when 'out there', app-less. They bring them into this new world order using their inimitable style that has become their hallmark: witty, provocative, engaging and highly accessible. The book draws on many insightful examples and before-their-time, at-the-edge research projects, widening the scope of topics to include food, fashion, new materials and the art of being more mindful. The secret, it seems, to creating the next generation of technologies that is not another app is to make us feel truly alive by capitalizing on how we use all of our senses in the world."Yvonne Rogers, Professor and Director of the University College London Interaction Centre; coauthor ofInteraction Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction

Getting beyond the glass touchscreen
By Daniel L. Ashbrook
There's Not an App for That is a great book for thinking outside of the "glass brick" that we're used to interacting with. Unlike many other books on mobile UX, this book doesn't tell you how to write apps, do wireframing, or size buttons; it guides you toward thinking about what comes after the iPhone and its progeny.

The book is divided into sections, each with a theme: moving from simply touching a mobile device to more rich interaction; encouraging people to engage with the world around them rather than focusing on the device in their hands; thinking about alternatives to clean, streamlined design; looking at the dividing line between personal, private devices and public interaction; how to encourage more mindfulness in interaction and connection between people; and how to think more universally about design and UX, to include the developing world.

Each section has several short, easy-to-read chapters, making the book easily digestible in small chunks. There are plenty of pointers to other resources to expand on the themes in the book, from web pages and videos to research papers.

Although not structured enough for an undergraduate text, I'm using the book as a textbook for a graduate-level mobile human-computer interaction class and the students are enjoying it very much. It provides a lot of good fodder for discussion.

The book is a fun and interesting read
By Jody Schofield
The book is a fun and interesting read. For that I give it 3 stars. There is a lot of theory in this book and although it does try to get the reader to think outside the box and what *could* be. We still have the reality of creating experiences on glass boxes. Great for "what if" conversations with friends, but I didn't find a lot of practical advice for improving my current apps. (Maybe that's just me).

A Dictionary of Japanese Food: Ingredients and Culture, by Richard Hosking

Nominated for the Glenfiddich Food Book of the Year Award, this timeless volume is the first and only book of its kind on the subject.

A Dictionary of Japanese Food helps food lovers around the world decipher the intricacies and nuances of Japanese cooking and its ingredients. Definitions in ordinary cookbooks and standard dictionaries—such as akebia for akebi, sea cucumber for namako, plum for ume—can be inadequate, misleading, or just plain wrong. Richard Hoskings eliminates the mystery by ensuring that each entry in the Japanese-English section includes the Japanese term in Roman script; the term in kana or kanji or both; a Latin name where appropriate; an English definition; and, for most entries, a short annotation.

The English-Japanese section defines important English food terms in Japanese and annotates those needing explanation. One hundred small line drawings make it easy for readers to identify everything from mitsuba to the okoze fish, and seventeen appendices address the most critical elements of Japanese cuisine, from the making of miso and the structure of the Japanese meal to the tea ceremony.

Newly typeset and featuring a fascinating and informative new foreword by Japanese cookbook author Debra Samuel, A Dictionary of Japanese Food will continue to help both food lovers and visitors to Japan discover the wonders of one of the world's great cuisines.

An absolute gem of a book, comprehensive and enlightening.
By A Customer
It is unique in a field that is not well documented in the English language. The main body is a Japanese-English dictionary of Japanese foodstuffs. Entries go: Japanese name in romaji (Roman alphabet), kana, kanji, (Chinese characters), then the English translation, then any scientific name. Each definition is several lines long, including details of preparation, culinary uses, and cultural, regional and seasonal notes. The book is profusely cross-referenced and illustrated in black and white. There is an Engish-Japanese glossary at the back and seventeen appendices covering key items such as katsuobushi, miso, Buddhist vegetarian cuisine and so on in greater detail.
This is not a cookbook, there are no recipes or instructions. Rather, it is a treasure-chest of culinary detail, illuminating a great deal that was previously hidden. The Japanese cuisine is vast and varied, but largely mysterious and unknown outside Japan, because there are very few definitive books written in languages other than Japanese. I am not certain that a comparative book exists even in Japan; it was compiled from Japanese sources but some of these were very old or quite obscure or scholarly. I can recommend it to anyone who knows anything about Japan or Japanese food and wants to make a quantum leap of knowledge and understanding.

Soon to be a major film, co-written and directed by Angelina Jolie Pitt. Until the age of five, Loung Ung lived in Phnom Penh, one of seven children of a high-ranking government official. She was a precocious child who loved the open city markets, fried crickets, chicken fights and being cheeky to her parents. When Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge army stormed into Phnom Penh in April 1975, Loung's family fled their home and were eventually forced to disperse to survive. Loung was trained as a child soldier while her brothers and sisters were sent to labour camps. The surviving siblings were only finally reunited after the Vietnamese penetrated Cambodia and started to destroy the Khmer Rouge. Bolstered by the bravery of one brother, the vision of the others and the gentle kindness of her sister, Loung forged on to create for herself a courageous new life. First They Killed My Father is an unforgettable book told through the voice of the young and fearless Loung. It is a shocking and tragic tale of a girl who was determined to survive despite the odds.

Amazon.com Review
Written in the present tense, First They Killed My Father will put you right in the midst of the action--action you'll wish had never happened. It's a tough read, but definitely a worthwhile one, and the author's personality and strength shine through on every page. Covering the years from 1975 to 1979, the story moves from the deaths of multiple family members to the forced separation of the survivors, leading ultimately to the reuniting of much of the family, followed by marriages and immigrations. The brutality seems unending--beatings, starvation, attempted rape, mental cruelty--and yet the narrator (a young girl) never stops fighting for escape and survival. Sad and courageous, her life and the lives of her young siblings provide quite a powerful example of how war can so deeply affect children--especially a war in which they are trained to be an integral part of the armed forces. For anyone interested in Cambodia's recent history, this book shares a valuable personal view of events. --Jill Lightner

From Publishers Weekly
In 1975, Ung, now the national spokesperson for the Campaign for a Landmine-Free World, was the five-year-old child of a large, affluent family living in Phnom Penh, the cosmopolitan Cambodian capital. As extraordinarily well-educated Chinese-Cambodians, with the father a government agent, her family was in great danger when the Khmer Rouge took over the country and throughout Pol Pot's barbaric regime. Her parents' strength and her father's knowledge of Khmer Rouge ideology enabled the family to survive together for a while, posing as illiterate peasants, moving first between villages, and then from one work camp to another. The father was honest with the children, explaining dangers and how to avoid them, and this, along with clear sight, intelligence and the pragmatism of a young child, helped Ung to survive the war. Her restrained, unsentimental account of the four years she spent surviving the regime before escaping with a brother to Thailand and eventually the United States is astonishing--not just because of the tragedies, but also because of the immense love for her family that Ung holds onto, no matter how she is brutalized. She describes the physical devastation she is surrounded by but always returns to her memories and hopes for those she loves. Her joyful memories of life in Phnom Penh are close even as she is being trained as a child soldier, and as, one after another, both parents and two of her six siblings are murdered in the camps. Skillfully constructed, this account also stands as an eyewitness history of the period, because as a child Ung was so aware of her surroundings, and because as an adult writer she adds details to clarify the family's moves and separations. Twenty-five years after the rise of the Khmer Rouge, this powerful account is a triumph. 8 pages b&w photos.

From School Library Journal
YA-Ung was a headstrong, clever child who was a delight to her father, a high-ranking government official in Phnom Penh. She was only five when the Khmer Rouge stormed the city and her family was forced to flee. They sought refuge in various camps, hiding their wealth and education, always on the move and ever fearful of being betrayed. After 20 months, Ung's father was taken away, never to be seen again. Her story of starvation, forced labor, beatings, attempted rape, separations, and the deaths of her family members is one of horror and brutality. The first-person account of Cambodia under the reign of Pol Pot will be read not only for research papers but also as a tribute to a human spirit that never gave up. YAs will applaud Ung's courage and strength.

A timely lesson for today's world
By David Y.
It has been more than 40 years since the black-uniformed columns of the Khmer Rouge rolled into Phnom Penh and changed the life of a 5-year old girl named Loung Ung forever. With the benefit of distance, it may be all too easy to dismiss the horrors of that era to a distant corner of memory, or to brush it off as a bizarre aberration of history. That would be a mistake. Communism as an ideology may be bankrupt, but the specter of Utopian extremism lives on. Many young men and women who flock to ISIS today are fired by the same misguided zealotry, the same disdain for common human decency in the name of a supposedly better world, that brought young men and women into the folds of the Khmer Rouge 40, 50, and 60 years ago. In fact, the parallels are chilling - like many leading figures of ISIS, Al Qaeda, and the Taliban today, the leaders of the Khmer Rouge were by and large teachers. They wrote beautifully, if somewhat naively, of a return to innocent rural simplicity. They impressed their students with their erudition, simplicity of living, and apparent dedication. How can such earnest people do any wrong? Many will find out at the cost of their lives.

Loung Ung's autobiography is a moving memorial to all the lives lost in that deranged quest for Utopia. In the eyes of the Angkar (the Khmer Rouge "organization"), liquidating the members of the old regime is but a necessary prelude to building a society of true believers. And if the Angkar believes that each hectare can yield 3 tons of rice (even though the best yield before the war was only 1 ton/hectare), then it must be achievable if everybody just works hard enough. The starry-eyed school-teachers of yesteryear who dreamed of an agrarian paradise had become totally out of touch. And with the absolute power they wielded, nobody was about to tell them otherwise. The result was mass famine as local cadres starved the people to turn in their production quota. As millions perished, the top leadership witch-hunted for "saboteurs" and berated their subjects for lack of revolutionary fervor.

Ung's book is full of vivid descriptions and keen observations that bring the vicissitudes of that era poignantly to life. Many passages are naturally cinematic. These include:

- Her idyllic family life in pre-KR Phnom Penh. The author was young, but her memory is sharp. Her colourful description of early 1970's Phnom Penh with its many exotic (to an American audience) sights, sounds, and colors is an adventure in itself;

- The arrival of the KR in Phnom Penh. A moment of high historical drama, but perhaps the author was too young to remember the details. This is where Chanrithy Him's dramatic account offers some truly memorable moments;

- Getting through the KR check points on the way out of Phnom Penh, as KR soldiers systematically rounded up all former members of the old regime. Most would be executed within days;

- A widow who took refuge with the author's family, tenderly talking to the baby that she carried with her everywhere, refusing to accept that he was already dead; (p.86)

- The ritual brainwashing of children at a child labor camp, with the clapping, the chanting of "Angkar!", the endless repetition of propaganda;

- Loung's savage attack against one of her tormentors, a bully in the children's labour camp who despised her because of her light skin. Even as a 7-year old she dreamed of the day when she'd have the power to come back to look for the bullies and "beat them until she was tired". She vowed never to forget. Her sweet-natured sister couldn't understand why she wanted to retain such horrible memories. But as Loung explained, she needed the anger, the thoughts of retribution, to fill the bottomless sadness in her soul.

I've always said that anger, or at least righteous indignation, is a much under-rated emotion. It needs to be controlled. It needs to be properly-channeled. But it's the juice that drives much social progress.

Finally, a few observations about the author's family background. A few readers took offense at the author's perceived lack of sensitivity. Perhaps she took too much pride in her family's light skin, high status, and economic prosperity. Reading her account of her family's encounter with the villagers in the KR base areas, it's quite evident there was much class resentment and perhaps plain-old jealousy on the part of the country folk. Even to this day many villagers in the old KR base areas seem to recall that era wistfully - Pol Pot's cremation site seems to have become something of a shrine. No doubt the villagers didn't enjoy the regimentation, but it was a topsy-turvy time when poor people like themselves could feel superior to the city folk who probably looked down on them. Not that the Khmer Rouge cadres themselves were particularly holy, of course. Plenty were mere opportunists. The Khmer Rouge village chief who lorded over the "new people" ate better, dressed better, and was apparently not above trading extra food for gold at exorbitant prices. (Ironically his corruption probably saved some lives, because life definitely got a lot harder after Angkar tightened things up and sent more soldiers into the villages.) As for Pol Pot, the young Loung Ung knew almost nothing about him, except that he was "fat" in a country of living skeletons.

A postscript: Those readers who are interested in how Loung and her siblings fared after the war may be interested in reading her second book, Lucky Child. While some readers may find the events in her later life less dramatic, I found it equally fascinating to read about her endeavors to come to terms with her past while trying to make a new life for herself in America. Like many children from similar backgrounds, she went through a phase when she attempted to cut all ties with her past (to the point of deliberately avoiding contact with her siblings) and plunged headlong into mainstream American youth culture. As she got older, she discovered that she could only conquer the ghosts of her past by embracing her roots, and to rise above her personal losses (and petty personal vengeance) by making them her life-long cause. While my own life experiences were nowhere nearly as dramatic as Luong's, there are enough similarities that what she wrote rang true to me and resonated. Well worth a read.

***** Five Stars - G-d bless you Loung Ung -The world learned nothing? History is replete with examples of genocide.*****
By L.I. NY Prof.
Sobering and current commentary reflecting on the state of the world today. It makes me fearful for the fate of our children. 200,000 Arabs kill other Arabs in Syria, Russians shoot down Malaysian civilian airliner in the Ukraine, Thousands of Christians are forced to relocation camps in Iraq or forced to convert to Islam upon pain of death. But these historic facts are dwarfed by the comparison to the millions of Thais who were brutally slaughtered by the Pol Pot regime. Has the world learned nothing? History is replete with examples of genocide. Remember Hitler learned a great lesson when the world stood by and did nothing as they watched the shameful slaughter of the Armenians at the hands of the Turks. Hitler is quoted saying "the world did nothing for the Armenians" and the world would do nothing to protect the Jews he slaughtered. Pol Pot learned from Hitler and Stalin and the Turks. G-d bless you Loung Ung. People who forget history are doomed to repeat it. The UN is a worthless side show run by counties with their own self interests.

Memoir
By Charlottekrn Bookfair
In 2000, Loung Ung published her childhood memoir which quickly became a national bestseller. Loung Ung’s memoir opens to the picture of a happy childhood in Phnom Penh. However the family’s happy existence abruptly changes with the invasion of the Khmer Rouge. The author describes the tragedy that befell her family and her fellow Cambodians during the nightmarish rule under Pol Pot’s reign of terror in the 1970’s. Ms. Ung relates their struggle to survive and the decisions they made which dictated their future. The author covers the invasion of the Vietnamese army who defeat the Khmer Rouge and of her reunification with her siblings. Loung Ung’s memoir, though she lived through horrific experiences, speaks to endurance, and to the love of family. Recommended.

Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness, by Edward Abbey

"A passionately felt, deeply poetic book. It has philosophy. It has humor. It has its share of nerve-tingling adventures...set down in a lean, racing prose, in a close-knit style of power and beauty."
THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOKREVIEW
Edward Abbey lived for three seasons in the desert at Moab, Utah, and what he discovered about the land before him, the world around him, and the heart that beat within, is a fascinating, sometimes raucous, always personal account of a place that has already disappeared, but is worth remembering and living through again and again.

Amazon.com Review
With language as colorful as a Canyonlands sunset and a perspective as pointed as a prickly pear, Cactus Ed captures the heat, mystery, and surprising bounty of desert life. Desert Solitaire is a meditation on the stark landscapes of the red-rock West, a passionate vote for wilderness, and a howling lament for the commercialization of the American outback.

Review
"Like a ride on a bucking bronco . . . rough, tough, combative. The author is a rebel and an eloquent loner. His is a passionately felt, deeply poetic book . . . set down in a lean, racing prose, in a close-knit style of power and beauty." ---The New York Times Book Review

From the Publisher
The year before I began working at Random House, I took a roadtrip with a friend from college. One night we spent sleeping under the stars on the side of the road, about one-hundred feet from the edge of the Grand Canyon. That night has stayed present for me. And so when I saw the deep desert reds and the striking blue sky of the cover of DESERT SOLITAIRE sitting in the office, I had no choice but to pick it up. Riding through the insides of Manhattan, tunneling through to work, I have been carrying this book with me. I keep closing my eyes and hearing the wolf call, the swish of the wind through the brush and seeing the great vast distances, feeling the heat of the day on my skin and the dry cool descent of desert night. In reading this book I am coming to a whole new understanding of the ecology of the desert west. Edward Abbey went alone to the desert as a seeker of a greater knowledge of himself, but also to dwell in a nature unfiltered, unpersonified, on its own terms. The desert is bigger than any of us, filled with intimate moments. This book will take you there.

Beautifully Written, Enjoyable if the Bigotry doesn't Bother You
By txqueen
Edward Abbey writes beautifully about the Southwestern desert, and his love for it really comes through. This was not enough for me, however, to overcome the arrogance and bigotry that comes through. For example, he describes other tourists and campers in derogatory fashion; at one point, he makes fairly nasty critical remarks about a man who went hiking on a photography trip and died. Yet, in many examples in the book, he does foolish things while hiking. Why, when someone else does foolish things in the desert, they are stupid, and when he does, he is merely adventurous? He (appropriately) criticized a tourist for wanting a photo of a Navajo man, but later in the book, when he is drunk, he offensively describes himself as "drunk as a Navajo". He has sexist views towards women that are clear in the book. For example, he describes himself, when weeping, as "crying like a woman". These are just two examples of his not being as enlightened as he purports to be. I am glad that so many other reviewers found his work worthwhile. He is, indeed, a champion of the natural desert environment and it's flora and fauna, and has an important environmentalist and conservationist message. I could not get past his attitude and bigotry, however, so the book was not enjoyable enough for me to recommend it to someone else.

Being there...
By Conway
OK. To fully appreciate this accumulation of experiences and stories... you need to plan a trip to Southern Utah. ( Go during a "shoulder" season so you will not have too many crowds ). You really need to actually be there. To see the horizons and stirring landscapes. And you will need to let go of any preconceived attitudes about deserts - any requirements for 5-Star anything. Take this book along and read a few chapters each evening. And you will need to allow yourself enough time to just sit... listen.. and reflect. Visit Moab and the Arches N.P. and imagine how it once was not too long ago. Head off to Dead Horse Point and then down to the Needles area - both in Canyonlands N.P. If you can, camp for a night or two. Look for the La Sal Range on the eastern horizon. In this way, I think you will develop a better appreciation for Mr. Abbey's world. A couple of chapters might be considered a bit off point, but that's all part of the experience. So --- get the book, plan your adventure... and, if the Southwest is a new experience for you, I believe you will come back home with some remarkable impressions. All enhanced by "Desert Solitude".

Okay, sure, it was fun.
By rlamazon
Alright, it's a classic. But, as I had kind of picked up from others who have written about him, Abbey was kind of filled with himself. Although, the anti-establishment group from the 1960's is pretty well represented in this time capsule, I don't like running into smart-than-thou park rangers, so some of the passages kind of rubbed me wrong. As for adventures, mostly spurred by leaping before looking, and a kind of hippie approach to being in the West, it's a romp of sorts. The thirty plant names mentioned over and over and over will certainly be burned into your brain by the time you finish. lol. Is it okay to think a classic is just okay? For what it's worth, I started Stegner next and am finding him slightly oblique. I guess I just find the wonders of the West wonderful, without writing about them in a mysterious, transcendental way. Even Muir, in his Scottish, time-context sensitive prose could paint a pretty good picture without getting too circumlocutory.

A Skeleton in God's Closet, by Paul L. Maier

When an ancient skeleton is discovered in Israel, will it shed new light on the life of Jesus or plunge the world into chaos?

Dr. Jonathan Weber, Harvard professor and biblical scholar, is looking forward to his sabbatical year on an archaeological dig in Israel. But a spectacular find that seems to be an archaeologist’s dream-come-true becomes a nightmare that many fear will be the death rattle of Christianity.

Carefully researched and compellingly written, A Skeleton in God’s Closet explores the tension between faith and doubt when science and religion collide. In the end, it’s a thought-provoking page-turner, driven by one man’s determination to find the truth—no matter the cost.

Could have been so much more
By Elizabeth D.
(TRIED TO BE VAGUE, BUT COULD CONTAIN SPOILERS) He had a great idea, but I can't help thinking he should have hired an author to write it and served as the expert in archeology and Biblical history. Unfortunately his story lacked most of what I love in a good novel, which is characters you come to know and care about (or love to hate) and a solid story line that is believable. i could not care about any of the characters because, for one I could not picture them as his descriptions were minimal, and secondly because there was no depth to them that brought them to life. They were formless, faceless people throughout the entire book for me. All the exotic locations lacked any sort of real description. I want to BE in the story, I want to know what it looked like, sounded liked, smelled like, felt like. This just didn't have it. It's like he followed a formula when he introduced a character and he described their hair and their eyes, and it was as if he assumed the reader has been to all of these locales and knew already what they looked like. I agree with other reviewers that the love story was contrived and lacked any believability. I found myself saying, "Oh brother" out loud a lot. The ending was a bit maddening for me because the characters were acting out of character, even for such weak characters. It's implausible that they were not suspicious about the swimming death, and it's completely implausible that the "hero" would agree to ride out to the middle of the dessert with someone he's just accused of the crime, after a ridiculous 180 in his beliefs. Then there was the 12-14 pages of calm dialogue between a man in a well and the man at ground level who just put him there in order to kill him. The story deserved a better ending. It's such an interesting plot, though, that it should almost be rewritten by an experienced author. I hate to be so critical because I know I could not write something even this good, but it's a shame that such a great story idea was missing so much.

You can write better than that
By RGueter
The author is a well known and renounded historian who effectively can combine historical facts with narrative fiction in a very effective manner. However, in this book, I conclude that the author is stronger in his fictional narrative than in relating historical and Biblical data. Left me saying quite frequently: "O come on. You can write better than that. Sounds a lot like Hollywood writers." Sometimes he pushes the envelope of the believable when he develops the plot of the main characters. Frequent "deus ex machina" materialize in his fiction.

Great read & informative Thriller
By A. Barth
This book was a page-turner, raised tough questions about Christianity, and was very informative as the characters navigate archeology, history, & spirituality while working on an archeological dig in the Middle East.
If you enjoyed the writing style & pace of "Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown, this book was written a decade earlier & deals with deeper and more realistic theological questions, in a more reverent manner.
