An Informational Treasure Chest Filled with Gold Nuggets of Helpful Tips

I don't know how Carla White does it differently from other authors, but I just understand the topics in her book at a whole new level of comprehension. Although there is a lot of personality in this guide, which I enjoy, it is more than the author's personal journey with her app development. It is an amazingly helpful guide that walks the reader through the process of creating their first app. I'm mid-way on the journey to creating my first app. This is a well-written highly understandable thorough guide for me.

Right away, the author addresses many of the excuses a novice app developer imagines in their mind including my favorites: "I don't have the time.", "The app market is saturated. I don't stand a chance.", and "What if I fail?".

"People want apps that give them superpowers, help them solve a problem, or simply let them unwind." Chapter 2 is all about the idea for an app. This chapter is my favorite since it is a gold mine of ideas and strategies.

Finding, contracting, and working with a software developer for app code and test is the big topic for Chapter 4. Being a non-iOS seasoned coder myself, I am intrigued with how hard others find working with us. Humbling ...

Chapters 5-7 are all about going live! I'm not there yet. However, the author has been there. She knows how.

Everyone knows that success in the app store, or any endeavor, means going the distance. Something about perseverance.

Pros:
- There are numerous relevant links through the book. Several of the links have accelerated my development or provided a solution (e.g., tribes/proxies, cloud options, testing options/links, graphic design tips).
- This is a personal journey for the author. She shares an amazing amount of lessons, tips, and advice based on actual first-hand experience. She includes failures (e.g., ambiguous screen mockups in a design spec). She has style and it clearly shows in her writing.
- This is a hands-on practical book: process-based development, steps to succeed, list of tools, tribal proxies for feedback, relevant links, and lots of tips from the author.
- It's a well-written guide that gets to each point succinctly. It is not an 1100-page programming reference manual - thank you very much!

Cons:
- None noted.

Carla White has done a great job with this book. From the book's introduction:

Insightful book

This book describes the process of creating an iPhone app, from the inception of an idea to marketing, design, development, and maintenance. A lot of the insights came from the author's own experience. There are lots of references throughout the book to companies, sites and tools to help an aspiring app maker on their journey. Although this book seems to be written for a non-technical audience, the marketing insights are useful for developers as well.

Very hard to read: the type size is too small, and for some reason the author/publisher(?) decided to make it thin and light. I would need a magnifying glass to read the book. The book didn't make me feel like I could create my own app easily.

In the English-speaking world, however, the poem has remained little known, languishing without an adequate translation. This wonderful new translation by eminent translator Burton Raffel brings the epic poem to life in English for the first time, rendering it in verse that does full justice to the original High Middle German. His translation underscores the formal aspects of the poem and preserves its haunting beauty. Often called the German lliad, Das Nibelungenlied is a heroic epic both national in character and sweeping in scope. The poem moves inexorably from romance through tragedy to holocaust. It portrays the existential struggles and downfall of an entire people, the Burgundians, in a military conflict with the Huns and their king. In his foreword to the book, Michael Dirda observes that�the story “could be easily updated to describe the downfall of a Mafia crime family, something like The Godfather, with swords.” The tremendous appeal of Das Nibelungenlied throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is reflected in such works as Richard Wagner’s opera tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen, Fritz Lang’s two-part film Die Nibelungen, and, more recently, J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.��

Exceptional translation of a classic

Burton Raffel's new translation of Das Nibelungenlied, the foremost epic of German literature, stands head and shoulders above every other translation available today. Fast-paced and clear, this English Nibelungenlied gives new life to the old Siegfried legend. One thing that immediately sets Raffel's translation apart from others is that he has chosen to translate the epic into poetry. As a result, his translation perfectly captures the flavor of the original.

Das Nibelungenlied is one of the underappreciated classics of western literature. An inspiration and source for everything from Wagner to Tolkien, the epic was first written in the 12th century, copied extensively throughout the High Middle Ages, and then virtually disappeared until the 1700s. Its popularity bloomed again during the romantic era, when poets keen on the medieval romance and scholars seeking a Germanic national literature found a common inspiration in the rediscovered epic.

None of this, of course, is apparent while reading the poem. But a foreword, introduction, and translator's notes--all wonderfully concise--give the reader all the information necessary to appreciating the poem's history with none of the pain found in dry, scholarly studies. Far from boring, the introduction and notes actually enhance the reader's enjoyment of the poem.

Raffel's translation is a thing of beauty. Comparison with the original Middle High German shows that he took great pains to balance a literal, accurate translation with poetic English verse. Raffel's endnotes to the translation give the reader some sense of his goals in translating the book--not only to match the simple, unadorned wording of the original, but also to render its quick-moving poetic style in English. His hard work paid off.

Whatever your interest in Das Nibelungenlied and whether or not you read the scholarly extras found in this book, Raffel's translation is exciting, brisk, and a joy to read.

What a fabulous (and modern) translation!

I had to buy this book for a class I took last year and had no idea of what to expect...I started reading this, and could not put it down! Frankly, I don't think that's something to scoff at, considering it is a 300 page 13th century poem! Usually, when reading something that old, one finds that the translator has insisted on maintaining the rhyme or form of the original, which is honestly quite exasperating for the modern reader. This one, while mainting the visual appearance of the poem with the mid-line and end-line breaks, reads exactly as prose and is so much more comfortable to work with!

I ended up reading through three books of translation theory written by Burton Raffel in an effort to analze and critique this book for a second class I was taking (one on translation), and really wish I could type up some of the points I came across in my research. Suffice it to say, I truly believe this is one of the best English translations of the Nibelungenlied there is (and I have read through a fair number of them), particularly when considering the modern reader.

There may be complaints by those who feel that the poem should be maintained with its "original" rhyme and form, and if that's truly what you are looking for, there are plenty of other translations out there that deliver this. Raffel's deviates only in that aspect, and is otherwise quite perfect at retaining the mood and content of the original written poem, and does so in a way that the modern reader can appreciate and comprehend.

This is a piece of literature taken from an era of history that we can never really grasp, since it is so different from ours, and yet I think the heart of the story remains extraordinarily clear and accessible for anyone today. I really cannot recommend this book enough.

Dennis E. Wisnosky, founder and CEO of Wizdom Systems, Inc., has published over 100 papers in the fields of management, CAD/CAM, electronics, computer science and CIM. His contributions to Business Process Reengineering began with its conceptual foundation in the 1970's, when he founded and managed the U.S. Air Force's Integrated Computer Aided Manufacturing program. For too many years I have searched for a practical, user friendly approach to business management that incorporates a variety of useful, yet appropriate and functional templates which we could utilize to maximize our operations systems. Very well written and on topic without going overly in detail. If you have a strong understanding of Exchange 2013, then this will be a nice compliment for picking up the details on Exchange 2016.
The author also points out what and where to pay attention for exam specific material and offers links on where to get more information which is very helpful as most of these exam prep books simply give a high level overview of each skill that is measured without any further detail or expression of the importance a certain subject may have on an exam, which is important if you are a day-to-day administrator of Exchange, some of the skills on the exam may never come into your day to day operations.

I would highly recommend setting up a lab to follow along with this book to practice what you read and help embed it prior to taking the exam or using in production.

All in all, great book by a very good author.
