"This is the most usable decision support systems text. [i]t is far better than any other text in the field" —Computing Reviews
Computer-based systems known as decision support systems (DSS) play a vital role in helping professionals across various fields of practice understand what information is needed, when it is needed, and in what form in order to make smart and valuable business decisions. Providing a unique combination of theory, applications, and technology, Decision Support Systems for Business Intelligence, Second Edition supplies readers with the hands-on approach that is needed to understand the implications of theory to DSS design as well as the skills needed to construct a DSS.
This new edition reflects numerous advances in the field as well as the latest related technological developments. By addressing all topics on three levels—general theory, implications for DSS design, and code development—the author presents an integrated analysis of what every DSS designer needs to know. This Second Edition features:
-
Expanded coverage of data mining with new examples
-
Newly added discussion of business intelligence and transnational corporations
-
Discussion of the increased capabilities of databases and the significant growth of user interfaces and models
-
Emphasis on analytics to encourage DSS builders to utilize sufficient modeling support in their systems
-
A thoroughly updated section on data warehousing including architecture, data adjustment, and data scrubbing
-
Explanations and implications of DSS differences across cultures and the challenges associated with transnational systems
Each chapter discusses various aspects of DSS that exist in real-world applications, and one main example of a DSS to facilitate car purchases is used throughout the entire book. Screenshots from JavaScript and Adobe ColdFusion are presented to demonstrate the use of popular software packages that carry out the discussed techniques, and a related Web site houses all of the book's figures along with demo versions of decision support packages, additional examples, and links to developments in the field.
Decision Support Systems for Business Intelligence, Second Edition is an excellent book for courses on information systems, decision support systems, and data mining at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels. wonderful book
By The Tao of Netflix
this book was a highly useful read for me. i'm in the field where DSS is a common part of our consulting, and this book gave me a solid understanding of the DSS universe sufficient enough to speak intelligently on the topic. prior to the book, my understand was very thin, and i have little hard core programming background. this book worked well to my background, and gave me a solid understanding. tech books are often either too advanced, or too basic; this was a nice blend of both.

A few shortfalls, but otherwise an interesting and informative read!
By OnceMore
Successful businesses are good at learning what information they need, at what time and in what form. Well-designed Decision Support Systems (DSS) have an important role to play in facilitating such learnings, and in this book, the author expounds on what makes a good DSS.
Unlike many DSS books which tend to focus exclusively on statistical concepts, this book provides a more comprehensive framework for thinking about what should go into the design and implementation of a really helpful DSS. According to the author, a really helpful DSS must not only have a wide variety of data modeling capabilities, but also excellent user interfaces with built-in artificial intelligence that can adapt to certain situations and also point out certain things that might prove important to the DSS user. Because different DSS users have different cognitive styles and people in different cultures also have different values, a DSS that can be programmed and / or configured to adapt to such differences as frictionlessly as possible will be the more helpful DSS.
Although the provided conceptual framework takes into consideration several theoretically important and interesting areas -- I especially liked, for example, the very informative discussion on the effects of cultural factors on DSS -- implementers ultimately have to pick and choose what feature sets they can practically afford to roll out in a timely fashion. Some practical guidance and helpful information on how to go about this would have been useful. For example, can we rank order feature sets in terms of importance? Are there any quality open source software that can give implementers a good head start for certain features?
Some limited portions of the book struck me as somewhat "dated". I noticed, for example, that the user interfaces shown in many of the screen shots are mostly of the simpler character-oriented kind rather than the more modern graphical kind, and the inclusion of an entire chapter explaining what object-oriented programming is at a time when most developers are already writing object-oriented software struck me as somewhat odd and not very 21st century-ish. Other than these shortfalls, I thought the book was an interesting and informative read!

A fine reference on Decision Support Systems
By RLC
This textbook does an excellent job of providing an in depth look at not only what a Decision Support System (DSS) is, but what goes into decision making itself, data, modeling, the underlying intelligence of the system, user interface issues, implementation, success evaluation, and much more. I enjoyed the myriad of case study snapshots in each topic, they helped solidify concepts with real-world examples.
This volume really does touch on many subjects within each domain. Databases, Data Warhouses, etc.
There are chapter end discussions, further reading suggestions, and questions as one would expect from a textbook. If you have the need or desire to learn about DSS in depth I would recommend this book. You will be exposed to some underlying statistics, some programming examples, user interface/audience examples, and more. You will truly gain knowledge about DSS from concept to implementation to gauging success of the system and all of the nuts and bolts that go with that. With that said will you be able to sit down and create your own DSS without any help after reading this book? No, well unless you posses a very deep and varied skill set and a lot of free time!
